Karl Robinson has said many times that Oxford United will not cut corners when it comes to Covid.

It is a cruel twist of fate, then, that the U’s head coach is self-isolating after this week’s positive test.

Everything I have seen, whether it is at the training ground or on matchdays, gives me reason to believe United are still taking Covid extremely seriously.

So the amount the virus has disrupted their season just goes to show how much it remains a part of life.

There were three positive tests in July, Nathan Holland isolating at the start of the season and a member of fitness staff testing positive before United’s trip to Bolton Wanderers on August 21.

Marcus McGuane and Gavin Whyte caught the virus three weeks ago, and now Robinson.

The U’s boss spoke several times last season about clubs allegedly breaking Covid protocols, and that was before restrictions relaxed.

You would have to be very naive to think every team acts on it when they discover a positive case.

We will probably never know for sure, but you cannot help but wonder just how widespread the virus still is across football.
