OXFORD United fans are getting behind a petition supporting the club’s plans for a new stadium.

The page is fast approaching its target of 2,000 signatures, despite only going live last night.

The petition was set up by independent supporters’ trust OxVox following this week’s announcement that United are proposing a new stadium at Stratfield Brake, near Kidlington.

Initial plans include an 18,000-capacity stadium, community and sports grounds and hotel, retail and conference facilities.

United have made a formal proposal to landowner Oxfordshire County Council to lease the site for 250 years, with cabinet members recommended to approve the scheme on Tuesday.

That would enable the club to negotiate with the council and its tenants over Stratfield Brake, with a view to applying for planning permission from Cherwell District Council.

The petition ‘urges OCC and local councils to proceed quickly to consider and approve the proposal’, while acknowledging that ‘local residents, as well as OUFC fans, must have their views and concerns fully considered’.

OxVox chair Paul Peros added: “There are a significant number of supporters, not only of the club but also local residents, who see the benefits to the community as a whole.

“We hope this petition grows after the proposal is hopefully agreed next week and is an indicator to planners and councillors of the support.

“It’s up to us to try to show the benefits of this. There are concerns and it’s important to show people are looking towards a sustainable stadium that improves the infrastructure.”
