Cars don't "leave roads" due to icy conditions. They are inanimate objects.

The driver of the car was driving in a way that was inappropriate for the conditions.

Spot on, Grandconjuration. I am sure I'm in the minority for thinking people should take some adult responsibility for their actions, rather than expecting the authorities to 'do something'. In this case, when there's been a heavy frost, you assume there is ice on the road and you drive slowly.

Should have been booked, driving without due care & attention.
Strange how people blame the car or the road conditions, for accidents.
Too many bad drivers on the roads today.

Without the facts all of you above have no idea what happened. You can be travelling at 10 mph and still skid off the road due to black ice.

Bart_SimpsonDoh this is pretty polite, if the word cyclist had reared its head, there'd be about 40 comments all with varying degrees of victim-blaming, stereo-typing & generalisations, and one or 2 they deserve injury/death.

Kind of interesting that similar comments have now appeared on a motorist story.

this was actually my mate who was driving in his car with his daughter....as Bart Simpson states, black ice is invisible so does not matter if doing 5mph, not a lot you can do...so grandconjuration keep your comments to yourself and know the facts before you make such a comment, although I guess your a person that just pre-judges everyone, typical old **** most probably, nothing better to do than to blame someone else....

I admit that my earlier comment was harsh and my motives were probably not that clear.

Firstly, there is a tendency in the OM (and throughout most of The Press) to report accidents involving motor vehicles so that appears that no human being was involved or responsible. This article would better headlined as "Driver loses control on ice".

There is another recent article that also demonstrates this depersonalisation; "Woman injured as car flips onto roof in Oxford". Was this woman just driving along when the car suddenly flipped over on its own accord? I doubt it. The report should have had the headline, "Woman loses control of car". Although, and I'm aware that I don't know all the facts, maybe a better headline would be, "How the hell does someone manage to overturn their car on a residential street if they were driving correctly?"

Madi50n has already noted the other motivation for my comment; any incident reported in the OM that involves a cyclist results in 40+ comments of anti-cycling bile from those that have no knowledge of the incident. I thought I'd see what happened if I wrote a similar comment regarding a car accident. Interestingly, Bart wants the facts! There's a first time for everything I suppose.

dowhatyoulike - I hope your friend and their daughter are ok.
