Fire crews from across the county battled a ‘significant’ fire spreading across 40 acres of crops.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue service scrambled to the field just outside Tackley in West Oxfordshire at the peak of yesterday’s (July 18) scorching temperatures.

Six crews from Rewley Road Fire Station, Eynsham Fire Station, Bicester Fire Station, Witney Fire Station, Wheatley Fire Station and Banbury Fire Station attended the scene.

The fire service said that while numerous firefighters tackled this blaze, several crews were also on the scene at other incidents due to the hot weather.

The fire is thought to have started at 3pm, with the most likely cause being a high voltage flash down after a fault on an electrical pole which set light to the crops.

The wind and high temperatures drove the fire across the field.

Crews worked in combination with local farmers to create firebreaks in the field and stop it at the road and canal.
