Plans to put speed bumps on a cul-de-sac used for parking have been called 'completely unecessary' and wasteful by some residents.

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing to put three speed cushions along the road that runs alongside the Leys recreation ground in Witney.

One comment on Witney Town Council's Facebook page said: "Finding it slightly strange as no one in their right mind speeds down there…. To a dead end… with the very high possibility of cars reversing out. We regularly park here and have never seen anyone over 10pm!"

Another said: "Is this down the parking area of the Leys? Didn't realise people drove fast enough to need speed bumps. I guess could be in the evening but then that's when people are less likely to be parked there? So they can just drive round the speed bumps?"

Others asked: "Is there any kind of data or speed monitoring data to support the need for this application?"

"What a waste of time and money. Completely unnecessary!!!"

Witney Gazette:

The aim is to improve pedestrian safety by reducing the speed of vehicles adjacent to the recreation ground and parking area, says the council.

The speed cushions would be approximately 120 metres, 170 metres and 220 metres west of its junction with Station Lane.

A public consultation is running until Friday October 21, 2022.

Following that, the county council will review the responses and if objections are received prepare a report to be presented to the Cabinet Member for Highway Management at a meeting scheduled for later this year or early in 2023.

This will be public meeting at which members of the public may apply to speak.

Documents giving more details of the proposals are available for public inspection online by visiting https://letstalk.oxfordshire.gov.uk
