Conservative MP for Witney Robert Courts has defended the Government's Autumn Statement.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt revealed tax rises and spending cuts worth billions of pounds aimed at mending the nation's finances in the House of Commons yesterday.

He has also warned families face "real challenges", as Government forecasters predict the biggest drop in living standards since records began.

The Office for Budget Responsibility says household income will fall by 7 per cent over the next 18 months.

The chancellor said tax rises and a spending squeeze would help tame inflation which he said had caused the drop.

Mr Courts said it was a balanced statement with money going to the right places.

He said: “The Chancellor has set out a balanced economic plan that gives our country the stability it needs during the turbulent times we are currently facing.

"Confronted with significant global challenges, the Chancellor has rightly prioritised tackling inflation with sensible management of the public finances.

"We will continue supporting the most vulnerable, while also putting the public finances on a sustainable footing.

"I welcome that the Chancellor has protected the Triple Lock while providing more funding to the NHS and local schools, making sure the Government’s priorities are aligned with those of West Oxfordshire residents.”
