Oxford United fans have reacted to the new visual and virtual flythrough of the club's potential new stadium.

The visuals show the U’s plans for a 16,000-capacity stadium and complex which the club is looking to build at The Triangle, south of Kidlington Roundabout, with the club’s licence agreement at the Kassam Stadium running out in 2026.

The complex is set to include a 180-bedroom hotel, restaurant, conference centre, health and wellbeing space as well as a community plaza.

The northern part of the building, next to the new plaza, contains plans for a range of retail spaces, including a club shop, sports bar and restaurant.

Paul Peros, chair of the independent supporter group OxVox, said: “I think it’s stunning. I have been involved in this process for a long time and I have seen glimpses of what is going to be involved but seeing the whole thing put together, I think they have done an amazing job.

“I think it fits very well in that area and I think it’s a beautiful bit of architecture.

"I think it adds so much to that area in terms of the green open spaces that are part of it, the walkways and the extra biodiversity that it will bring. I’m really amazed by it.”

On integrating the proposals into the local community, he said: “You can’t bring something like this to an area and not have it be a positive for the community.

“From day one we have been calling it the community stadium and it's got to be viable for the local community or we won’t be accepted as part of that community.

“We are going onto a bit of area that was not accessible. You weren’t able to walk on it or see it probably and it opens it up.

“You have the stadium there but you have also got walkways around it, lakes and picnic areas.

"So all of a sudden you have opened that area up for the local community which for a lot of the time that’s what it will be. Obviously there are only games every other week for the season.”

Mr Peros, who is a developer himself, said the visuals of the plans can help people put the proposals into context.

He said: “It’s really exciting to see it step to the next stage. Planning is always where this would offer up more scope for the club to reveal visuals like this.

"Plans to tackle traffic and parking issues and those are all being gone through now in advance in planning.

"It’s a massively positive step.

“I am a developer myself and I have always said when people can see the visuals they can put in context and get an idea of what actually is going to be there and they have had that now and it's generated a lot of excitement.

“I think it will have allayed a lot of fears by locals who may be expecting an old-school ugly edifice but you have got this beautiful building.”

United fans on social media have also reacted to the new visuals and virtual flythrough.

Andy Yeats wrote: "I’ve supported this club since 1980 and I’ve literally got goosebumps watching this."

Season Lydon said: “What Oxfordshire deserves and needs and it will be a real asset in a perfect location. Looks fantastic.”

Graham Holliday added: “Looks good but needs a ‘big home end’ - Kidlington direction - with rail seating.”

Another fan wrote: “That’s incredible if that’s what they aim for. Looks amazing.

“Only concern is say in 30 years the club reaches Premier League and is popular, how do they add to it?”

The U’s will be hosting a series of exhibition boards until October 21 at the Holiday Inn hotel at Peartree Roundabout, where the designs will be on show from 9am to 8pm every day.

There will also be three ‘meet the project team’ days on Thursday (3pm to 8pm), Saturday (9am to 8pm) and October 19 (3pm to 8pm).

During these sessions, members from the stadium project team will be able to answer questions.

The release of the new images and virtual flythrough is the first step taken by United since the lease of land at The Triangle was approved in principle by Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet at a meeting on September 19.

The leasehold comes with several conditions, including the U’s being given planning permission from Cherwell District Council and a net zero plan being produced.
