Sir – Lin Lalor’s letter (last week’s Witney Gazette) asking for more supermarkets appeared (ironically) opposite an article stating that cheap supermarket alcohol has hit pub trade.
The writer must be unaware of the true costs of supermarkets: to their suppliers, especially farmers, to their staff and to the planet. Every time a supermarket has opened in Witney, local businesses have closed down.
We need more local shops; more human contact; greater awareness of where our food comes from and its true cost; and above all, we need to start growing our own food.
The ‘technology’ already exists: it is called permaculture.
