Sir – On today’s news (December 8) we are told that the Government intend to install air cleaners into UK schools which are close to main roads, where there are high pollution levels.
And so I wondered if Oxfordshire County Council intends to fit these in the houmes along Bridge Street, at the same time that they install a pedestrian crossing that no-one living there wants.
The bigest danger of having a crossing in Bridge Street is not to the safety of road users, or an emergency vehicle knocking someone over but to the health of the people who live along its length, and suffer the consequences already from the extreme volume of traffic (that they are still hoping will decrease when Mr Hudspeth stops blaming others and does something practical like sign off Shores Green).
Maybe the council thinks that an S2 Bus and a 40-tonne lorry puffing out diesel fumes whilst waiting at a crossing is no different to how it is today. I don’t think so.
If the county council is unsure of its obligation to those families (many suffering with asthma-related illness) they may like to look up this Government website: www.gov.uk/government/policies/protecting -and-enhancing-our-urban-and-natural-environment-to-improve-public-health-and-wellbeing/supporting-pages/international-european-and-national-standards-for-air-quality
