Sir – Your report about the revitalised Corn Exchange (11 February) included the observation that some people are unhappy about the proposed sale of the Langdale Hall, and the reply from the mayor, Jeanette Baker, that Witney town council could not afford to run two halls.
The question that this raises for me and for others (and it genuinely is a question: I'd be interested in the answer) is this: why, in that case, could Witney afford two halls at the time that the Langdale Hall (originally the drill hall) was built, when the population of the town was only an eighth of what it is now?
