OXFORD United supporters are confident another play-off challenge is in store this season.

We asked Oxford Mail readers where they think the U’s will finish in Sky Bet League One, splitting the table into four chunks: first to sixth, seventh to 12th, 13th to 18th and 19th to 24th.

There were 624 votes cast and the top six was the clear winner, taking 57 per cent of the poll.

Seventh to 12th was a comfortable second with 39 per cent, leaving just four per cent of people predicting a bottom-half finish.

If United reach the play-offs for a third successive year they will become only the seventh team to do so since the competition began in 1986/87.

Three went on to gain promotion, and all from what is now League One: Crewe Alexandra in 1997, Stoke City in 2002 and Huddersfield Town in 2012.

But maybe we should not be getting too ahead of ourselves.

For those supporters who predicted a top-six finish, we ran a second poll to find out more.

After all, that could mean winning the league, gaining automatic promotion, or winning or losing in the play-offs, our four categories.

Of the 341 votes cast, the most popular answer was for United to finish in the top six but miss out on promotion for a third successive year.

That was chosen by 36 per cent of people, while another 31 per cent think the U’s will finally enjoy play-off success.

More than one in four people – 26 per cent – feel United will gain automatic promotion and seven per cent voted for Karl Robinson’s side to win the League One title.
