ELLIOT Benyon’s wonder goal helped Oxford City return to the Vanarama National League South summit on a record-breaking afternoon for the club.

The experienced forward fired into the top corner from near the halfway line just before the break, capitalising on a poor clearance by goalkeeper Michael Edegbe.

It was worth the entrance money alone on the day City recorded their highest competitive attendance at Court Place Farm, with 1,208 fans pouring through the turnstiles.

They quickly had something to cheer as Joe Iaciofano put the hosts ahead with his tenth goal of the season, only for Alfonso Tenconi to quickly respond.

Benyon’s special strike separated the sides at the break, before George Harmon made it 3-1 18 minutes from time.

Slough continued to push and Tenconi bagged his second to set up a grand finale, with Oxford United loanee Tyler Goodrham flashing a cross-shot against the woodwork.

On the day David Oldfield returned to the dugout, the City manager was without two players who were isolating.

Reece Fleet and Dan Matsuzaka were unavailable, with Harvey Bradbury also missing out, as Lewis Coyle, Elliot Benyon and Zac McEachran came into the starting line-up.

It saw City change to 4-3-3 and Nana Owusu drop to right back.

Meanwhile, Goodrham made his debut for Slough alongside ex-U’s duo Freddie Grant and captain Scott Davies.

With the record crowd watching on, City started on the front foot. Iaciofano flashed a cross-shot across the penalty area, with Benyon flicking a header well wide moments later.

Max Worsfold nodded Goodrham’s cross on to the top of the net as Slough came forward for the first time, but the hosts responded instantly with the opening goal.

City had already looked dangerous down their right and they made the most of it, McEachran playing the ball into the channel for Iaciofano to finish from a tight angle.

The lead lasted just six minutes as Slough dangerman Tenconi levelled the scores.

The No 10 grew up near Andriy Shevchenko and used to practice with the former Ballon d’Or winner in his garden – he showed the prolific instincts of his old neighbour to head home Freddie Grant’s cross.

City grew sloppy towards the half-hour mark and Max Worsfold almost punished them, but his curling effort struck the base of the far post.

Coyle went close twice in quick succession as the game opened up, with Edegbe thwarting him one-one-one moments after the offside flag went up.

The goalkeeper flew to his right to deny the midfielder shortly after, when City had five on two on the counter-attack.

Ben Dudzinski made an excellent point-blank save to deny Tenconi after a dangerous Worsfold cross, before Benyon stole the show.

Edegbe left his area to clear a through ball, but City’s relentless pressing forced the stopper into a mistake.

The pass came straight to Benyon, who arrowed the shot into the top corner from just five yards inside the visitors' half.

It capped an entertaining opening 45 minutes, but Slough were still in the contest and only an excellent Jack Davies tackle stopped Tenconi running through on goal early in the second period.

The visitors remained very much in the contest and a few spicy challenges started flying in, before Edegbe stood up well to push away Coyle’s fierce effort.

Slough substitutes Matt Lench and Ben Harris replaced Worsfold and George Hunt midway through the half, before Iaciofano fired high and wide after his quick feet created space on the edge of the box.

City were enjoying a good spell and they got the all-important third as the game entered its closing stages.

It was a classy goal, with Harmon arriving on Iaciofano’s outside and steaming into the penalty area before planting a shot underneath Edegbe.

City looked home and dry, but Tenconi again responded six minutes later.

Dudzinski should have done better as he failed to claim a looping cross at the far post, with the striker on hand to head home his second of the afternoon.

The goalkeeper made up for it moments later when he blocked Tenconi’s shot after the striker burst through one-one-one.

Slough kept the move alive and the ball came out to Goodrham, who saw his effort hit the crossbar and fly away.
