OXFORD United maintained their 100 per cent record in pre-season with a 2-1 win at Vanarama National League South side Hungerford Town.

Trialist Jodi Jones started in a youthful line-up and looked lively on the right wing, claiming an assist when he delivered a corner for Oisin Smyth to head home just before the half-hour mark.

Joel Rollinson equalised with a lovely lob 13 seconds after the restart, before Ben Davis went one better with a brilliant curling effort on the hour.

United ended the match with almost a full-strength side and those players are likely to start at Eastleigh tomorrow night.

Jerome Sinclair was expected to be involved after lining up against Banbury United on Saturday, but the forward missed out with his absence unexplained.

Four first-team players missed out altogether as Sam Long nursed an ankle injury and Alex Gorrin, Sam Baldock and Jack Stevens were rested.

Hungerford provided a good physical test for the young U’s and they would have threatened more with a better end product before the break.

Jones barely had a kick in the first ten minutes but he started to make an impact on and off the ball, drifting inside from his wing and talking the less experienced players through the game.

The visitors got slicker as the half went on, although former United trainee Matt Berry-Hargreaves almost gave Hungerford the lead when he just failed to get on the end of a free-kick.

The home side threatened most from set-pieces, only for the U’s to take the lead from a corner.

Jones whipped the ball towards the edge of the six-yard box and Smyth climbed highest to head just inside the far post.

The rest of the half passed without much danger to either goal, other than a fierce Tyler Goodrham effort that knocked centre back Jeremiah Gyebi to the floor.

Rollinson was one of several Hungerford players to come on at the break and it took him 13 seconds to provide the end product the hosts had lacked, lifting the ball over Simon Eastwood and in off the far post.

At the other end, Jones showed his class with a delicious cross with the outside of his boot that Goodrham headed over.

The U’s went close again when James Golding headed a corner towards Slavi Spasov in the six-yard box, only for goalkeeper Mark Scott to push the ball away at point-blank range.

Jones was replaced by Gatlin O’Donkor on the hour mark and the former Coventry winger would have been proud of United’s winner.

A corner came out to Davis 25 yards out and the Thai midfielder bent a gorgeous curling effort over Scott and into the net.

Hungerford almost levelled again following a goalmouth scramble and both sides had chances before United brought on the big names with 17 minutes left.

The U’s immediately took control and Scott spread himself well to block Matty Taylor’s effort, before Billy Bodin fizzed an effort just over as they finished strongly.
