KYLE Joseph has several reasons to be excited about joining Oxford United after sealing a season-long loan.

The striker completed his move from Swansea City today to become the club’s eighth summer signing.

Joseph has lacked game-time in south Wales and recently turned out for the Sky Bet Championship outfit's Under 21s, with no first-team appearances this season.

The 20-year-old played only 12 Swansea matches last term, either side of a loan spell at Cheltenham Town, and revealed the chance to get regular minutes with United was too good to turn down.

He said: “It was the main factor, I’ve not played as much as I would have liked for the last two years.

“I’ve had a bit of a stop-start time, but now I want to kick on and get going.

“I’ve had a few 90 minutes with the Under 21s at Swansea, trying to keep myself in as good a shape as possible.

“I spoke to my agent a few weeks ago and it took a while.

“When I came in to see the place last week and met the manager, seeing how enthusiastic he was about the football club and where he wants to take it, it was something I wanted to be part of.”

Joseph was not involved when United faced Swansea in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, with his move all-but done.

There were suggestions the striker attended last Saturday’s win over Cambridge United at the Kassam Stadium, but he set the record straight.

“I remember seeing the rumours,” he said.

“I was training in the morning and sat at home watching Sky Sports, so I wasn’t at the game."

Joseph has made 54 competitive appearances for Swansea, Cheltenham and first club Wigan Athletic since his debut in October 2020, scoring nine goals.

The Scotland Under 21 international adds another option up front for United, with Matty Taylor the only experienced striker available while Sam Baldock recovers from a thigh injury.

And learning from some established names was another attractive proposition for the youngster.

He said: “One of the main reasons coming here was to develop.

“You look at Matty Taylor, he’s scored almost 20 goals for the last three years in the league and he’s had a good career.

“It’s a stage where I can learn from someone like him, whilst trying to implement it into my game as well.”

Joseph added: “The style of play is really good. All you have to look at is the stats last season, scoring the most goals in the league.

“As a striker you’re going to get chances in this team, so that was one of the main reasons to come here.

“Ask any striker, all they want is a winger who crosses balls into the box for strikers to get onto.

“I’m looking forward to breaking into the team and getting a chance.”

Joseph has also filled in on the right, but sees his strongest position as up front.

Asked what he will bring to the U’s, he added: “Pure energy, up and down the pitch.

“As a striker I never like to make a centre half’s job easy. I’m a goalscorer and love getting into positions to score them, and I'm a hard worker for the team.

“I’m athletic and I’ll run the channels, so I can’t wait to get going.”

Karl Robinson is not thought to be targeting another new face up front, with Taylor, Joseph and Baldock joined by youngsters Gatlin O’Donkor and Slavi Spasov in that position.

And the U’s head coach feels his latest signing will bring something new to the squad.

Robinson said: “He’s completely different to Matty. Matty is a fox in the box and if you get a lot of chances he will take them.

“Kyle’s one where his power, energy and desire to run around is incredible.

“We’re excited by that, he’s someone we’ve monitored for a long time and tried to get before, so we’re extremely happy about this one.

“He’s a tremendous character, really assured, polite and well-mannered and he knows why he’s here – to score goals.”
