JORDAN Thorniley is set to be on the sidelines for ‘a few weeks’, Oxford United head coach Liam Manning has confirmed.

The 26-year-old centre back picked up a knock to his ankle and was forced to hobble off during the last 10 minutes of the 5-1 loss at Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.

He then missed the 1-0 win against Carlisle United at the weekend, and was replaced in the side by Stephan Negru.

Providing an update on Thorniley’s situation this afternoon, Manning said: “Jordan’s going to be missing I think for a few weeks.

“I don’t know for definite, I’ve got a meeting about it so we’ll get some more clarity, but he’s not going to be here for a little while.”

Negru was a worthy candidate to be man of the match against Carlisle, with Manning impressed by the young Irish defender.

The U’s boss said: “I’ve said it from day one about needing everybody and Steph’s a really good example of someone having not been in the team, and making sure that you’re ready when called upon because it can change that quick.

“Steph’s a great example of someone that’s turned up, done his gym properly, trains properly, and his attitude is terrific.

“I’ve had numerous conversations with him along the way in terms of about being ready, and I’m delighted that he stepped in and delivered at the weekend for the team.

“If he’ll have a 500 or 600-game career, it’s now about achieving levels consistently.

“I’m sure knowing his character and how he is, he won’t get carried away.”
