LIAM Gilbert is set to leave as Oxford United Women manager just five weeks after agreeing a new deal to remain in charge of the club.

Gilbert, who celebrated five years with the side this summer, almost led the team to the league crown last season.

United headed into the final day of the Southern Premier Division campaign top of the table and knowing a win would’ve secured them the title, however they were beaten 1-0 at Ipswich Town.

The U’s reported that Gilbert is to take up a full-time role with a Barclays Women’s Championship outfit.

United said in an online statement: “Oxford United would like to thank Liam for his hard work and dedication, and wish him well for the future.

“The club is committed to the development of our women’s teams so George Anthony and Matt Parry will take over in the interim while the club look for a suitable replacement.”

Earlier this summer, Gilbert agreed a new deal to stay with the U’s, with that announced on July 10.

The club get the 2023/24 campaign underway on Sunday when they make the trip to MK Dons Women.

United’s first home game of the season is a fortnight later when they welcome newly promoted Hashtag United Women.
