LIAM Manning says there is nothing to read into former Oxford United winger Marvin Johnson watching the club’s win at Derby County last night.

Johnson was spotted among the away supporters, enjoying United’s 2-1 victory at Pride Park.

The 32-year-old signed a new deal with Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield Wednesday last month.

Asked if there was anything in Johnson being in the away end, Manning responded: “No ultimately, no.”

Johnson spent one season with United, before joining Middlesbrough in August 2017 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £2.5million.

He bagged seven goals in 55 appearances during his time with the U’s, before going on to net seven times in 103 games for Middlesbrough.

Johnson signed for Wednesday in August 2021, and has scored six times in 95 matches.

Although he only spent the one year with United, Manning was understanding of how the club could still mean something to Johnson.

The U’s head coach said: “It’s a terrific club, I have to say. In the short time I’ve been here, how I’ve been welcomed, the area and the people, and some of the history behind the club, it’s really important that we understand what our roles are while we’re at the club.

“Ultimately, we do everything we can in our place to improve it while we’re here.”

On potential incomings though, Manning added: “We’re working extremely hard, I feel like we’re making progress, but until they’re done, you never know.

“Until it’s signed, you always carry that nervous energy of whether you’re going to get it over the line.

“We’re in talks with people and hopefully we can get some stuff done, but until it is, I’ll stay nervous.”
