OXFORD United centre back Teddy Mfuni is to leave the side by mutual consent after less than a year with the club.

The 19-year-old joined the U’s from non-league Warrington Town on January 12, signing an 18-month contract with the club.

Mfuni impressed former United head coach Karl Robinson during a trial period, however leaves having failed to make an appearance for the U’s first team.

The club said in a statement: “Chances have been hard to come by and the hope is that by leaving now, Teddy has the best opportunity of finding a new club in January.

“We thank Teddy for his hard work and wish him well for the future.”

Prior to signing for Warrington, Mfuni was released by Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End last summer.

Mfuni was the last permanent signing made by Robinson, with other players to arrive at United in January including loanees Brandon Fleming, Ateef Konate and Tyler Smith.

The permanent signing of Stephan Negru meanwhile was announced on December 16 last year, prior to officially joining the U’s on January 1. The defender arrived from League of Ireland Premier Division side Shelbourne.
