CIARON Brown says there is more to come from him as he continues to play in his preferred position.

The 26-year-old scooped both the players’ player of the year and the Andrew Knapton supporters’ player of the year awards at Oxford United last season, despite spending most of the campaign at left back.

This season, the signing of Greg Leigh, and then addition of Joe Bennett when Leigh injured his calf in November, means Brown has been able to play regularly at centre back.

He has featured in both a back four and as the left-sided centre half in a three-man defence, performing with consistency whatever the case.

Asked whether United fans are now finally seeing the very best of him, Brown responded: “I think you’re seeing a better version of me, I don’t know about the very best though.

“I always think there’s more room for improvement, it doesn’t matter how old or young you are.

“I think I’m playing well and I’ve been good this season, but I also don’t think you’ve seen the very best yet.”

He added: “I do think I’m a consistent player for Oxford, and I play the majority of the games.

“This season, I’ve started a lot of games in my actual position, which obviously makes things a bit better, but wherever I am on the pitch, I always try and do my best, whether that’s a position I’ve never played before or a position I know really well. I’m always going to give 100 per cent.”

Next up for the U’s is a tantalising home game with Barnsley this evening, as two teams with ambitions of promotion from Sky Bet League One go head-to-head at Grenoble Road.

Key for the Tykes is their quality in midfield, with the likes of Luca Connell, Herbie Kane, Adam Phillips and Callum Styles all impressing this season.

Kane is a familiar figure for United supporters, having made an impression while on loan at the club in the 2021/22 campaign.

The 25-year-old is enjoying a fine season so far, notching six goals, while providing five assists for his teammates in the league.

Brown said: “It’ll be a test for everybody on the pitch. We know their midfield is good, and we know Herbie from the time he was here, but I look at our midfield and I have full confidence in our players.”

He added: “It’s come to the stage now where every game we play, we’re looking at each other and saying ‘this is a big game’.

“It might seem a bit bigger to the fans because it’s a team around us, but to me, every game is quite similar, and every game is a must-win now.”
