DES Buckingham believed there were some promising moments after partnering Will Goodwin and Mark Harris for the first time, although more work is required.

Harris began Oxford United’s game at Wycombe Wanderers as the lone striker, but he was then joined up front by Goodwin, who replaced Josh Murphy at half-time.

It meant the U’s switched from a 4-2-3-1 set-up to what was essentially a 4-4-2 formation.

Tyler Goodrham moved to the right, with Ruben Rodrigues on the left, but floating infield to allow Greg Leigh more space to bomb on from left back.

United head coach Buckingham said: “When you come here and see the physical size of this team, they play to those strengths a lot.

“Rather than move Mark Harris out wide, we’ll obviously try and push for a win.

“I felt that getting Will on would give us a platform to play off, whether it was into feet or aerially.

“We also knew that if we played Ruben out on the left, he could roll inside and still play as a 10 when we had possession.

“We asked Tyler Goodrham and Billy Bodin to make sure we had width on the opposite side.

“It was about trying to see could they [Goodwin and Harris] play together, and there were some good parts to that, but some areas we still need to work on.”

Asked about the partnership between Goodwin and Harris moving forward, Buckingham said: “We need to get him [Goodwin] match-fit first.

“We gave him half an hour last weekend, and then 45, so we’ll check to make sure he’s responded well to that, and then we’ve got a decision to make again, as it’ll be Tuesday-Saturday.

“I’ll be guided by the medical advice on whether he’s available for Tuesday, and I’d like to think he would be.

“The more that he plays, the better he will get and the more of a partnership will develop.”
