DES Buckingham rued his Oxford United side conceding two ‘very avoidable’ goals in their defeat at home to Leyton Orient.

United took the lead through Tyler Goodrham’s backheeled flick inside the six-yard box, with 20 minutes on the clock.

However, Orient hit back in the second half with goals from Ollie O’Neill and George Moncur.

The U’s missed the opportunity to clear the ball from their defensive third, prior to the away side producing a neat, intricate move in the lead-up to the equaliser, while Moncur too easily cut inside Marcus McGuane before finding the net.

United head coach Buckingham said: “The first one, we had four different chances to clear the ball, and we didn’t, and then for the second one, we’ve allowed a player that’s right-footed to come in onto his right foot rather than tackle him or keep him wide.

“Both goals are very avoidable and very frustrating, but it’s something we will learn from.”

After taking the lead, the U’s failed to hammer home their advantage and didn’t look like adding a second goal.

Buckingham said: “It’s the old argument if you’re 1-0 up, do you go for a second or do you defend the goal?

“The most important thing is you don’t get caught doing both. The way I coach and the way I want to work, I always try and get the second.

“I’ve done that everywhere I’ve coached, but it’s about making sure while you try and do that, you shut up shop at the other end as well.”
