DES Buckingham says his Oxford United side will not have its attention diverted away from themselves as they look to try and secure a place in the Sky Bet League One play-offs.

The U’s are one of four teams hoping to clinch a top six spot on the final day of the season tomorrow.

United make the trip to Exeter City, to take on an in-form Grecians side unbeaten in nine games.

While there may be a temptation to tune in to the scores elsewhere as Barnsley, Lincoln City and Blackpool also vie for a play-off position, U’s head coach Buckingham will only concerned with results elsewhere at the final whistle tomorrow.

He said: “We just need to do our jobs, and if we do our jobs, we’ve shown over the last couple of weeks, that’ll bring performance, and throughout that time, performance has often given us the result. That’s all we need to focus on going into the game at the weekend.

“We’ve spoken all week, and the message has been all week, that we focus on what we’re doing.

“That’s been since the awards night on Sunday, then in training, and the same throughout the game.

“I’m not interested in what Lincoln are doing, I’m not interested in what Barnsley are doing. We need to make sure our full attention is paid to this game, to get the result that we want.

“Whatever the others happen to be at the full-time whistle, we’ll know when that happens.

“If we take our attention slightly off that at any point, we won’t give ourselves the best chance of getting the result we would like.”

Buckingham feels that United are as prepared as they can be for whatever happens at St James Park tomorrow afternoon, helped by a growing momentum and understanding over the last couple of months.

The U’s have only lost twice in their last nine matches, and have won five of those games.

Buckingham said: “It’s like an exam. You know when you go into an exam whether or not you’ve revised as much as you should have.

“You hope if you haven’t that the questions don’t come up to the answers you don’t have.

“What I really like about the last two months is that we’ve done as much as we can to put ourselves in this position.

“That for me brings a level of calmness because you’re not panicking about too much. There’s always the unknowns and the uncontrollables, but to an extent, we feel we’ve done as much as we possibly can to be in this moment come Saturday.”
