MORE than 900 cheeses came under the critical eyes – and taste buds – of judges at the 20th British Cheese Awards yesterday.

Chief judge and organiser Juliet Harbutt, who lives in Churchill, near Chipping Norton, where the contest was held in marquees on the village green, said enthusiasm was high.

Ms Harbutt said: “The idea is to inspire and educate people to show them how amazing British cheeses are.

“There are some great cheese makers in Britain and this year there were some particularly amazing blue cheeses.”

She added: “It takes about six months to organise the event.”

Yesterday’s competition featured a total of 911 cheeses entered in 75 different classes.

The panel of 55 expert judges handed out a total of 23 awards.
