BBC steps in over the Clarkson 'n word' row

Witney Gazette: Jeremy Clarkson Jeremy Clarkson

The BBC has told Jeremy Clarkson how seriously it views “the regrettable episode” that saw him accused of using a racist word.

The Top Gear presenter was on Thursday accused of using the “n word” in an unbroadcast piece of filming for the show.

But on Thursday night in a video online he said he “loathed” the word.

Mr Clarkson, pictured, who lives near Chipping Norton, said he had deliberately tried not to use it during filming for an episode in which he was reciting “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe” but it had sounded like he had afterwards.

The BBC said in a statement: “Jeremy Clarkson has set out the background to this regrettable episode.

“We have made it absolutely clear to him, the standards the BBC expects on air and off.

“We have left him in no doubt about how seriously we view this.”

Instead of hounding one of its most popular presenters, the BBC should instead be demanding that the Daily Mirror investigates whoever it was who leaked this unapproved out take to them. Perhaps no surprise that a certain ex-editor has wated no time in sticking his knife in.....

Mr Clarkson's controversial style makes a refreshing change from the anodyne, champagne socialist dross which characterises much of the BBC's depressing output these days.

It is clear to me that someone with a secret agenda is trying to bring down Mr Clarkson; the BBC should simply note his apology and take the wretched Mirror to task over this deliberate act to discredit Mr Clarkson.

I wonder how much the despicable person who leaked this clip was paid by that muck-raking rag?

"I wonder how much the despicable person who leaked this clip was paid by that muck-raking rag?"

Ah! Of course that's a different muck-raking rag to the one that Clarkson works for isn't it? Which, of course, would have done exactly the same if it had been offered something similar featuring another "personality".

Clarkson needs finally to grow-up and realise that he can't continually behave like a 13-year-old sniggering with his mates in the playground. And apologies to most of the 13-year olds I know who display far more more maturity than Clarkson does.
