RESIDENTS in West Oxfordshire's second largest town will be left with just one bank on their doorstep after Lloyds announced branch closures.

Carterton currently boasts three banks but by September it will have only have Barclays left.

In January Chipping Norton's mayor Mike Tysoe warned 'chaos' would ensue after HSBC announced it was closing in the town as well as in Carterton and Kidlington.

Yesterday Lloyds revealed its branch in Carterton's Burford Road is among 100 set to shut nationwide.

Lloyds published the full list of closures on its website, which states the Carterton branch will close on September 25.

In a report the bank said: "We have made the difficult decision to close this branch because of the changing way customers choose to bank with us, which has resulted in customers using it less often.

"The nearest alternative branch is the Witney branch. Additionally, one of our new Lloyds mobile branches will visit the Carterton area which customers can use for many of their everyday banking needs."

It is not yet clear how many staff will be affected.

Statistics in the report show that 427 customers use the branch on a regular monthly basis, while 26 use it on a regular weekly basis.

It says counters at the branch are 10 per cent quieter than last year.

HSBC in Alvescot Road is due to shut next month, leaving only Barclays in Black Bourton Road, which opens just three days a week.

Mayor of Carterton Lynn Little said: "It's a big town and consideration has got to be given to the senior generation and those not able to use a computer. There are people who rely on that bank, I'm very concerned.

"With the mobile service we need to know what exactly that's going to be.

"I would implore Barclays to open five days a week."
