The cream of West Oxfordshire’s sporting and arts talent is being recognised by the distribution of thousands of pounds of grants.

Twenty-eight young people have been selected by the district council to receive its Achievement Awards grants, to help further their skills and careers.

Almost £10,000 has been earmarked to help get their careers off the ground.

They include disabled triathlon athlete Graham Kiff, world champion kickboxer Imogen Shayler and young cricketer Jack Taylor, who is part of the England elite player development squad.

The scheme was set up as part of the council’s policy to enhance tourism, leisure and cultural opportunities and to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The grants are to help with the cost of training, coaching, travelling and equipment. And those classed as higher achievers will receive up to £1,000.

District councillor Hilary Biles, the council’s cabinet member for leisure, tourism and health, said: “The standard for the achievement awards this year has been extremely high, especially in the higher awards where applicants have competed at world championship and European level in their sports.

“In the arts field, again, we have had an influx of applicants.

“We have a wealth of talented young people in west Oxfordshire and they are truly wonderful role models for their peers.

“Young people frequently get a bad press and I’m delighted the council is able to support and encourage these young people who are dedicated to their sport or art, to achieve their aims.

“We wish them every success in the future.”
