SINCE February people in Witney have been aware that the town’s main post office faced the threat of closure.

It was one of those rare occasions when opposing politicians united in a common cause, when Conservative MP and Prime Minister David Cameron joined Labour councillor Duncan Enright in handing over a petition to the Post Office with more than 2,000 signatures against closure plans.

Now we learn that Post Office managers have agreed a deal to transfer counter services to WH Smith’s in the Woolgate Centre.

This raises fresh concerns. The WH Smith shop is small and can be very busy at times.

Add customers for postal services to the mix and it could be too much for the store to handle.

But the move would also mean those services could be available for extra hours, and on Sundays, and still in a town centre location.

The Post Office wants the views of the residents on the plan, so it is up to people to get in touch and give their opinions before a final decision is made.

If 2,000 people can come together to agree they don’t want the post office to move, then we hope the same number can put their views forward and help make sure that this growing town gets post office services that can cope with future needs.
