Sir – The idea of placing solar panels over 64 good acres at Salutation Farm, Barnard Gate, is horrible (Gazette, September 18).

The panels will cover some of the best land on the planet – land which will be cut off from sunlight by the solar panels. The green plants beneath the panels will die.

Green plants are solar panels. They are cheap, self-maintaining and highly efficient solar panels. They do exactly what solar panels do, which is to capture the sun’s energy but they do it for free. Covering green plants with expensive solar panels is crazy. This is to destroy one renewable energy source with a less efficient one.

The sensible thing to do is leave the green plants in the sunlight and make use of the energy they catch (this used to be called farming).

Solar panels should only be put over dead ground like rooftops (all those industrial estates and public buildings, for example) and car parks.

Global warming is real, dangerous and imminent. But obliterating one kind of solar panel with another will only make matters worse. Obliterating good land for such a futile purpose is sin, and expensive sin too.
