Sir – The arguments for and against the Carterton East development continue to be discussed at great length on your pages.

However, the one overwhelming point that must be taken into consideration is noise.

In my last letter, I stated that, for the first time since moving here, my wife and I have had to complain to RAF Brize Norton repeatedly about the incessant noise of Hercules ground-running. In response, your correspondent from as far away as Minster Lovell wrote on the same subject.

We recently attended a function at Carterton Community Centre in Shilton Park and upon leaving we were greeted by the very loud noise of a ground-running Herc. We therefore drove back passing the site of the proposed new houses opposite the airfield. The noise there was intolerable.

So, if those in favour of Carterton East have their way, they will be subjecting the purchasers of these houses to constant noise, sleep deprivation, inability to relax in their gardens or even to open windows on summer nights.

Our MP David Cameron is aware of the noise problem but there are no quick fixes especially as the Hercs are here for the forseeable future and their successor, the A400M, could be equally noisy.
