Sir – The recent award of £35m in Government funds to help alleviate congestion between Witney and Oxford is surely a welcome investment for all who rely on the western approach to the city.

Using the funds to develop the Witney-Oxford route itself is perhaps the obvious way forward, but another alternative would be to invest in routes that would reduce the burden on the A40.

This way the money would achieve the same result whilst perhaps providing additional benefits.

Redirecting a tiny fraction of the £35m into the Eynsham-Botley community path project (which has already proved a hugely popular idea with both the public, councillors and politicians) would make this idea a reality, encouraging commuters from Witney and Eynsham to take to their bikes instead of clogging up the A40 in their cars.

Let’s grasp the opportunity.
