Sir – With winter weather now with us, it is important we think about the birds and wildlife in our gardens, especially after such a mild autumn.

Many will struggle but there are a few simple things we can all do that will help make all the difference.

In chilly weather birds will appreciate a variety of foods but fatty foods will be especially helpful, for example, fat balls or home-made bird cakes made with lard and packed with seeds and fruit. Dried mealworms are also a great treat to put out.

It is just as important to have a regular supply of fresh, unfrozen water available for drinking and bathing.

Finally, it’s also important to help provide shelter from the elements, by planting dense hedges, such as privet or hawthorn, or by allowing ivy and holly to grow.

These all provide great cover for birds to roost in. Nest boxes can also be good roosting sites.

We can all make a real difference to garden birds and improve their chances of surviving the winter.

Birds don’t need much but by providing a regular supply of food, fresh water and somewhere to shelter you will rewarded by some great views of our stunning wildlife.
