Sir – I wonder if rail travellers among your readers are aware of a decision by First Great Western to increase rail fares on the Cotswold Line in a way that would cost some passengers an extra 87 per cent?
Passengers travelling from from Charlbury to London can buy an off-peak return to London costing them £33.90, which allows them to leave, from 9.42am onwards, outside the morning peak, but return on one of four trains that depart from London during the peak period.
From May 17, passengers will have to pay £62.40 if they want to return on one of the peak evening services, an 87 per cent increase. For anyone who goes to London in this way (say) 20 times per year this means they would either have to pay an additional £570 or hang around in London waiting for a later train. I suspect that many would opt for the Oxford to London buses instead.
