MUSICIANS from across West Oxfordshire are taking advantage of a new platform to show off their talents.

Artists ranging from complete beginners to serious professionals are being encouraged to show off their skills at an acoustic music night in Witney.

The event, called One Night Stand, takes place at Fat Lil's, in Corn Street, and is already attracting some surprisingly eclectic performers - with everything from Celtic bands and Eastern European singers to Witney-based Senegalese master kora player Jali Fily Cissokho taking to the stage.

The night, which has been running in Witney for three years, was previously based at the Marlborough Hotel, in Market Square, and the Red Lion, in Corn Street. But co-founder and compere Jim Greenan, said it was now 'thriving' at its new home. He said: "Fat Lil's is the perfect venue for One Night Stand. It has exactly the intimate, friendly atmosphere we want for these nights.

"We get a really appreciative audience, who welcome both the hardened pros and the people who are performing for the first time. You can expect to hear a wide range of musical styles through the evening.

"We also have the occasional performance poet or comedian dropping in. We never know who'll come through the door!"

There are up to 16 slots for performers each night, with artists doing two songs each.

The night is held on the third Wednesday of each month.

Anyone wishing to perform should call Mr Greenan, on 01993 702673, or turn up before 8.30pm to get on the list. Entrance is £3.50, with performers getting in for free.
