Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon could aim Vulcanite at the Galway Festival next month after the versatile gelding completed a hat-trick at Worcester on Sunday.

The seven-year-old, a winner over hurdles at Stratford before following up over fences at Market Rasen, reverted to the smaller obstacles to capture a handicap hurdle over two and a half miles.

With Tony McCoy preferring to ride 4-1 favourite Join The Clan, who like Vulcanite is owned by his boss, JP McManus, Longsdon signed conditional jockey Ger Fox, who claims 5lb, as the likelihood is he may ride the horse in Ireland.

And the talented Irish youngster gave the 9-1 shot a cracking ride to pounce at the last flight, before powering away from Join The Clan to score by a length and three-quarters.

Longsdon said: “He seems to love the faster ground and the sun at this time of year, and, if he is OK, it will now be all systems go for Galway at the end of July.”

The trainer’s only concern about sending his charge across the Irish Sea would be the possibility of soft ground if rain was forecast.

The Summer Plate at Market Rasen would be an alternative option, with stablemate Grandads Horse, who was second at the Lincolnshire venue recently, also a possible for both races.

Longsdon continued his winning ways on Monday when he made his first visit to Lingfield for an all-weather Flat meeting to see Investissement run out an easy winner of a selling stakes.

The eight-year-old, who didn’t take to hurdling, coasted home by four and a half lengths from Edgeworth in the mile-and-a-half contest in the hands of crack amateur rider Simon Walker.

Investissement was sold at the subsequent auction for 4,000gns, and will now join Epsom trainer Lee Carter.
