JORDAN Bowery declared Oxford United have only seen a fraction of his talent after getting off to a flying start with the winner at Fratton Park.

The striker admitted afterwards he did not yet know all his new teammates’ names, but within 24 hours of signing a short-term contract he began to repay head coach Michael Appleton’s faith in him.

Bowery’s U’s career was only eight minutes old when the substitute ran on to Jake Wright’s pass and came up with a terrific first-time finish from 25 yards to sink Sky Bet League Two promotion rivals Portsmouth 1-0 on Saturday.

It was his first goal since August and the former Rotherham United frontman had not played competitively since November, so he is certain there is much more to come.

“Skip was running with the ball and as soon as I saw him put his head up I made that run because I knew he had the quality to put it in the space,” Bowery said.

“It was a great ball and I just hit it first time across goal.

“I knew it was a good connection, but I didn’t realise until a couple of seconds later that it was going into the corner.

“That’s just a little glimpse of hopefully what I’ve got to offer the team. I’m a striker and I’m here to score goals, so as it goes it’s a perfect debut.”

The strike came in front of more than 2,000 U’s fans – their biggest turnout on the road for two and a half years.

It contributed to a crowd of 17,840, higher than seven Championship games on Saturday, which added to Bowery’s delight.

He said: “It couldn’t have been a better occasion.

“The crowd here was electric and our fans were fantastic, they made it a special moment for me.”

It rounded off a hectic couple of days for the striker, who agreed a settlement on the remainder of his contract at Rotherham United after falling out of favour.

Bowery only met up with the U’s squad on Friday afternoon and will only have his first training session with them this morning, so is not yet completely sure of everyone’s names.

He said: “I’m getting there, I’m probably halfway through but it’s a lot to remember.

“I’ve only been here 24 hours but it’s been good so far.

“When I came on the gaffer told me to go on and show everyone what he brought me here for.

“It couldn’t have gone any better.”
