EARLIER predictions of mine saw Oxford United finish the season with 78 points on both occasions.

For the U’s to end up a point shy of that, means I can be pretty pleased with my crystal ball.

My initial forecasts were made with 10 games to go, when United were seventh and three points shy of sixth-placed Stevenage.

I said the U’s would beat Cheltenham Town 2-1, and win 2-0 at Port Vale, both of which were on the money, while there were then correct results against Bolton Wanderers, Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion.

The only one to let me down was the Shrewsbury Town clash, when I backed United to win, and if not for a late equaliser that would’ve been the case.

Then, with four matches left in the season for the U’s, the crystal ball came back out for some revamped predictions, including for all the runners and riders in the Sky Bet League One promotion race.

The predictions for United at this point went wide of the mark, after forecasting 1-1 draws against Peterborough United and Lincoln City, and a 2-1 win over Stevenage.

Thankfully, for both the U’s play-off push, and a slice of my own personal pride, I said United would win at Exeter City on the final day. The only blemish was that I said the U’s would keep a clean sheet.

In addition to the above four games, another 22 matches were made predictions for. But how did I fare?

Just the one correct scoreline across the 26 fixtures – Blackpool’s 1-0 win at Carlisle United – was balanced out with nine correct results. Room for improvement certainly.

One little bit of solace is that I got the top six right, with just United and Barnsley the wrong way round.
