JACK Payne believes the mixture of Oxford United’s attacking players gives them a potency few teams in Sky Bet League One can match.

Only four teams in the entire EFL have scored more than the U’s 26 league goals this season.

It is a tally which took them until mid-December to reach in the last campaign.

They have been spread around too, with 14 players netting in 15 league games – twice as many as tomorrow’s hosts, Fleetwood Town.

Payne has been crucial to the way Pep Clotet’s side have overwhelmed teams at times, most recently in a 20-minute spell against Rotherham United last weekend which saw them score three times.

“Not many teams can do that,” the Huddersfield Town loanee said.

“Once we get our momentum going, no-one in the league can stop us, in my opinion.

“We’ve got some great attacking players and a lot of willing runners, which is important.

“I think we’ve got a good mixture of players who like to get on the ball and others who are willing runners.

“It’s working well and we’ve got a good balance. We just need to keep finding each other, because it’s working well.”

The fact United did not beat Rotherham, drawing 3-3 despite the excellent spell, shows there is still scope for improvement.

But Payne has been encouraged by the way a new-look side have taken shape.

He said: “I just thought it was important to get off to a good start, which we did.

“I think we have plenty of quality to be right up there come the end of the season.

“A lot of new players have come in, so there’s been a lot of time gelling together, so I think it’s a positive where we are at this stage.

“I think we would have taken it because we’re only getting better.

“There’s only positive times ahead in my opinion.”
